A curved modern brick building with horizontal banding houses a library and Storyhouse venue on the ground floor, with large windows throughout. The contemporary structure contrasts with a historic Victorian Gothic clock tower visible in the background. The scene shows a pedestrianized town center with red post boxes, street lamps, and people walking along the paved area under a partly cloudy sky.

Storyhouse Chester Enters Cinema of the Year Award

Storyhouse Chester appeals to cinema goers to help its bid to win a new British Independent Film Award

For years, before Storyhouse Chester, we were without a cinema or theatre. Now we have one of the most interesting independent cultural venues in the country. Storyhouse Chester combines cinema, theatre, comedy, a library, a space for groups to meet, a cafe and a wonderful children’s area. It is a huge asset to Chester and, just like the city’s growing independent food scene, brings people into the centre, adding to its vibrancy.

Storyhouse on Hunter Street is a cultural centre and requires votes from the public. To secure a nomination for the BIFA Cinema of the Year Award it needs you! Having outlined to BIFA what makes it such a special venue, film lovers and supporters of their local cinema can make a difference by voting up to the 22nd of September.

Following this five nominees will be announced, and the winner revealed on Sunday, 30th of November at London’s Roundhouse.

Storyhouse is an exceptional, exciting space to be. The cinema screens handpicked cult classics as well as the latest films. Foreign screenings can be seen regularly and weekly family screenings. I love the Christmas cinema held in the main building for the festives! I’ve seen ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ here about 7 times.

As well as being an important hub for cinema goers Storyhouse is a vital part of the community in Chester. The area around Northgate Street has benefitted from its arrival. Around it has sprung the need for some of Chester’s newest and most exciting bars and restaurants – Covino, Planeterra and Bread & Butter to name but a few. Not to mention the opening of the Chester New Market. I appreciate how much Storyhouse brings tourists in to sightsee and eat and spend money in Chester. I’ve welcomed lots of food tour guests joining after a night at the theatre or watching a comedian at Storyhouse. My business has benefited to thanks to its presence.

All these developments have helped elevate Chester, creating a centre for entertainment and fun. A place where friends and family can meet day and night to enjoy the city and each other’s company. Storyhouse certainly deserves recognition as a big cog in the wheel of cultural development. It is at the heart of what is most important in a city like Chester – community.

BIFA will be shining a light on exceptional cinemas all over the UK. With the help of its community, there’s no reason why Storyhouse Chester, a not-for-profit cinema, shouldn’t be right in the mix bringing home the goods. I’d like to see it putting Chester on the map for yet another good reason!
