Cheese & Wine & Chester – The Best Combination in the World
This October, I ran our first tasty, varied, fun and informative Cheese and Wine Tour in Chester. Planned for a long time, finally it happened! I feel so lucky to live in a county producing tremendous cheeses, traditional cheese such as the classic cloth bound Cheshire (Mr’s Bournes is my go to) as well as some of the most delicious new creations from up and coming cheese makers.
I have been so lucky over the years to work with such Cheshire icons as Carole Faulkner, founder of The Cheese Shop Chester. The Cheese Shop Chester stocks incredible local and global cheeses, but many of the cheeses being made in traditional ways in Cheshire are to be found in this fascinating and ever evolving hidden gem.
Cheshire cheese, the oldest cheese in the United Kingdom (Queen Victoria’s favourite), at one time only made in the Roman garrisons in Chester, has to feature on a Cheese and Wine Tour. Therefore, it was never in doubt that somewhere along the way we would showcase this salty, crumbly stalwart of the cheese world in spectacular form. Pureists don’t be alarmed, you’ll be getting cheese in a variety of guises, but the classic cheese board will never go unfeatured. Depending how much extra wine you drink on top of the 6 glasses of really superb wine included, we’ll make your night a memorable one.
Chester loves Cheese
I will say at this point, Cheshire has a wealth of top class cheese made by superior local cheese makers. This makes it a great location for cheese exploring. Take a minute to look up Claire Burt and Anne Calyton. Both have had incredible journeys, and make insanely good, award winning cheeses. The county of Cheshire has a rich and ancient cheese heritage, which is why it is fantastic to point out new spots selling wonderful UK cheeses such as The Cheese Wedge, and to put a spotlight on our food culture here in Chester.
Along with some of Chester’s best restaurants and bars, we’ve put together a four stop tour for all cheese and wine lovers, it being the ultimate combo. This evening is for every level of wine and cheese lover, regardless of how much or little you know about it. Knowing you like it is enough.
Along the way, you’ll savour exceptional cheeses and wines whilst those in the know will give tips and make suggestions without any stuffiness.
Book this with friend or family, but nobody who can be pursuaded to drive. We want wine fiends.
Ready yourself for evening supping and loads of great accompaniments – Cheese and Wine Touring is here!
